Break the Rules !

Design Rules Do’s and Don’ts – at one time the rules were strictly adhered to but nowadays – anything goes – buck the trends !!

Ceilings are always white – who says ?  Balance all white schemes by introducing a strong colour in the ceiling.  Ceilings much too high ?  Lower them by using darker tones.  White too stark ?  Use beautiful Farrow and Ball “whites” much softer.

Rugs should be no longer than the length of your sofa – who says ?  Use a large square rug and place chairs and central coffee table to introduce a lovely conversational area.  Use a large rug and place the edges under sofa feet – this softens the look.  Use a large rug in the room to pull many different colours together and give the room cohesion.

Don’t incorporate too many patterns – who says ?  Pattern can give a plain room some interest.  Mix lots of patterns but maybe soften the look by using only one or two colours throughout.  Use different patterns to turn your room into your own unique space.  If you are still a bit timid keep large items plain but introduce lots of pattern in throws, cushions and lampshades.

Small Rooms can’t take dark colours – who says ?  We believe it will pull a room in but not the case.  Dark colours actually make a small room look larger.  If your room is naturally dark, play to its strength and go with this, introduce bright pops of colour.  Don’t try and lighten it by making it all white – this only makes a dark room seem gloomy.

Have fun bucking the trends – send over some images of your unique space.

Tips on using Texture in your Home Decor

Using a variety of textures in your home décor is a great way to add interest, style and character but it can be surprisingly difficult – too many textures – too busy, same textured repeated – unbalanced. Follow these tips to achieve a fabulous textured haven.

Decide which mood you’re trying to achieve and select your textures accordingly. For a cosy feel textures should be soft and tactile like rich velvets, shimmering cotton mixes and faux fur for throws, cushions and rugs. For a more streamlined look choose accessories with matt finishes, like concrete floors, steel accessories and non-reflective, functional surfaces.  Fabrics with tonal textures work well.

Don’t forget the walls. Whether you select a high-gloss paint, wood panels, exposed brick or tile.  Wallpaper is a simple way to introduce texture to walls to compliment your soft furnishings.

Layering textures is the greatest way to get the most of contrasting fabrics but don’t indulge in too many – three or four at the most.  Blending textures evokes a strong mood, adds depth and is visually stimulating.

If you are a little afraid of textures a simple rule of thumb is to combine toning plains and patterns.

Texture can have a powerful visual impact when it is done boldly. Dare to embrace a luxurious metallic velvet fabric for that rich elegant WOW factor.

Harry and Meghan’s Cottage in Kensington Palace grounds

We wish Meghan and Harry all the best for the future together which they start in Nottingham Cottage within the grounds of Kensington Palace.  A modest two bedroom, two sitting room bathroom and kitchen with a cute little garden complete with barbeque.  It is typically furnished in English Country style but will Meghan bring her own unique touch to her new home ?

Photos shared by the Suits star from her former property show that Meghan favours a minimalistic monochrome colour scheme, but uses details such as photo frames, coffee table books and bold blooms to add personality and pops of colour to rooms.  She will likely be wanting to hang some of her prized artworks on the walls at her new home; Meghan once shared a photo of a figure study watercolour painting by Inslee Fariss on Instagram, while Harry is reported to have spent thousands on a painting by British artist Van Donna, called Everybody Needs Somebody To Love, for his girlfriend.

Tips to Luxe Up Your Home

Tidy away clutter, this makes a huge difference.  Leave sunglasses or keys in a glass bowl, magazines and papers in a textured basket.

Smell – nothing says I have a clean and serene home like enticing fragrances.  Whether it be a mix of plug in fragrances, pot pourri or candles  – layer them up.

Add natural elements to your home using wooden bowls or even driftwood.  Introduce some fresh flowers, bunch together some inexpensive supermarket bought in clear or coloured glasses and dot around a side table  Mix some glass agates or metal objects together – warms up a room

Add layers and textures around the room which will pull all the elements together and put guests at their ease immediately,
